The Short Answer

A standard Umrah package from the UK typically includes your visa, return flights, airport transfers, and hotel accommodation in Makkah and Madinah. What varies significantly between providers is the quality of those inclusions, how close your hotel is to the Haram, and what support you receive on the ground if something goes wrong.

Understanding exactly what is and is not in your package before you book is one of the most important things you can do. Here is a clear breakdown of everything you need to know.

The Core Inclusions: What Every Decent Package Should Cover

The Umrah Visa

Your Umrah visa should always be included in your package. A reputable UK Umrah travel agent handles the visa application on your behalf, ensures your documentation is correct, and submits everything through the proper authorised channels.

What you need to be aware of is that the visa process requires specific documents from you, including a valid British or other passport with at least 6 months remaining, your vaccination certificates, and passport-sized photographs that meet Saudi specifications. Your travel agent should guide you through exactly what is needed and when to submit it.

If a package does not include visa handling, or if the agent seems vague about the process, treat that as a serious warning sign.

Return Flights from the UK

Flights should be included in any full Umrah package. What differs between packages is the airline, the departure airport, whether the flight is direct or has a stopover, and the overall travel time.

From the UK, common departure points include London Heathrow, Manchester, and Birmingham. Flights typically land at King Abdulaziz International Airport in Jeddah or Prince Mohammad bin Abdulaziz International Airport in Madinah, depending on your itinerary.

When comparing packages, do not just look at whether flights are included. Look at which flights. A package with a lengthy layover or a very early morning departure might cost less on paper, but the impact on a physically and spiritually demanding journey is real. This matters even more if you are travelling with elderly relatives or young children.

Airport Transfers

Getting from the airport to your hotel in Makkah or Madinah should be fully arranged as part of your package. This means a private or group transfer waiting for you on arrival, taking you directly to your accommodation without the stress of navigating unfamiliar roads, dealing with local taxis, or trying to communicate in a country where you may not speak the language.

Good packages include transfers at both ends of your journey, on arrival and for your return to the airport. Check that both are confirmed, not just the arrival transfer.

Hotel Accommodation in Makkah

This is where the real differences between packages show up, and it is the inclusion that matters most to the quality of your Umrah experience.

Hotels in Makkah are categorised by their distance from Masjid al-Haram. The closest hotels, sometimes referred to as Haram-facing or Zone 1, allow you to walk to the Haram gates in under 10 minutes. Some of the premium properties are connected directly to the Haram complex itself.

Further away hotels are cheaper, but the distance becomes a significant factor when you are performing Tawaf multiple times, walking to and from the Haram for every prayer, and doing this in temperatures that can exceed 40 degrees Celsius in summer months.

When you look at a package, always ask or check exactly which hotel is included, which zone it is in, and what the actual walking distance to the Haram is. A package that lists “5-star hotel in Makkah” without specifying proximity is not giving you the full picture.

Hotel Accommodation in Madinah

Most UK Umrah packages include a stay in Madinah as well as Makkah, usually split across a 7-night or 10-night itinerary. In Madinah, accommodation near Masjid an-Nabawi follows the same principle as Makkah. Nearness to the mosque matters, especially for elderly people or those with limited mobility.

Standard packages typically offer 3 to 4 nights in Madinah alongside 3 to 4 nights in Makkah. Longer packages give you more time at each location, which many pilgrims find makes the experience far more meaningful and less rushed.

What Is Not Always Included (And What to Check)

Meals

Many standard Umrah packages are accommodation-only or bed and breakfast. Full board is available but usually comes at a higher price point. Make sure you know what meal arrangement is included before you book, particularly if you are travelling with children or elderly relatives for whom finding and travelling to restaurants independently may be difficult.

Guided Ziyarat (Historical Site Visits)

Some packages include guided visits to the historical and spiritual sites around Makkah and Madinah, such as Jabal al-Nour, the Cave of Hira, Masjid Quba, and the Jannat al-Baqi cemetery. These visits are a deeply valued part of the Umrah journey for many UK pilgrims, but they are not automatically included in every package. Check whether Ziyarat is part of your package or an optional add-on.

Umrah Tutorial or Guidance Sessions

Reputable Umrah travel agents, particularly those serving the UK Muslim community, often include pre-departure briefings or guidance sessions that walk you through the rituals of Umrah step by step. This is especially valuable for first-time pilgrims. Not every provider offers this, but it is worth asking about.

Travel Insurance

Some packages include travel insurance, others do not. Given the nature of the trip, the distances involved, and the physical demands of performing Umrah, travel insurance is not optional. Make sure it is either included or that you arrange comprehensive cover independently before you travel

The Question Worth Asking Before You Book

Before you confirm any Umrah package, ask your travel agent one direct question: if something goes wrong while I am there, what happens?

A good agent will give you a clear answer. They will tell you about their ground support, their emergency contact process, and how they have handled problems for previous customers. An agent who gives you a vague answer to that question is telling you something important about what your experience will be if things do not go to plan.
