What is Ihram?

Ihram is the sacred state a pilgrim must enter before performing Hajj or Umrah. It combines physical purity and a focused spiritual mindset.

1The State of Purity

Before putting on the Ihram garments, one should perform Ghusl (ritual bath), clip nails, and trim moustaches. The intention is to purify oneself for the journey both physically and spiritually.

2The Garments

For men, Ihram clothing consists of two white unstitched sheets. One covers the lower body (Izār) and the other is draped over the shoulders (Ridā). Women wear their regular loose-fitting, modest clothing that covers the entire body except the face and hands.

3Prohibitions of Ihram

Once in the state of Ihram, certain actions are prohibited, such as cutting hair or nails, using perfume, hunting, and engaging in marital relations. These restrictions remain until the pilgrim completes the Umrah rituals and performs Halq or Taqsir.
